Village regroups for upcoming year

MILLERTON The village of Millerton held its annual organizational meeting Tuesday evening, the first time that the village’s new mayor, John Scutieri, sat at the helm of the board table.

"I would really like to jump right into work," he said, after which he immediately announced who would replace the position he left open on the Village Board when he was elected mayor. "I couldn’t be more pleased to announce it will be Yosh Schulman."

Schulman is a regular at Village Board meetings. He will be sworn in next week and start on the board immediately thereafter.

Scutieri next announced that the village clerk position is to be combined with the village treasurer position, as it had been in years previously. Karen McLaughlin, who has served the village as deputy clerk and treasurer was appointed to the new position. The board will now seek a new deputy village clerk.

The next set of appointments covered the village Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA). Scutieri stressed that he wanted to appoint people who were neutral across the board. Thia Tarrab was reappointed to another year as Planning Board chairwoman and John Gilmor for another term as a Planning Board member. John Clark was reappointed to another term as chairman of the ZBA while DeLora Brooks was reappointed to another term as a zoning board member.

The board then went through a number of committee appointments among its own members, after which Scutieri announced who he chose as his deputy mayor.

"It was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but Marty Markonic is going to be our new deputy mayor, if he accepts," Scutieri said.

Markonic accepted the offer.

The board also set its meeting hours, and increased its meeting schedule from once a month to twice a month. The Village Board will now meet on the first Monday of the month for its workshop meeting and on the third Monday of the month for its business meeting. Both meetings will take place at Village Hall at 7 p.m.

Another appointment was made after the meeting schedule was announced, this time for village attorney.

"I know the board feels as strongly about this as I do," Scutieri said. "Michele Haab is coming back as village attorney. I know we’re all very pleased."

During the meeting the mayor and his trustees also chose an official newspaper in which it will announce all public notices, etc. That newspaper is The Millerton News. The Poughkeepsie Journal was chosen as a secondary official newspaper.

The next Village Board meeting is set for Monday, April 16, at 7 p.m. at Village Hall.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
