Webutuck Varsity girls soccer team starts off year on high note

WEBUTUCK — It’s only the beginning of the soccer season, and already the girls of the Webutuck Varsity team are at the top of their game, winning three games and only losing one since their season began last week, which takes them to the top of their division.

Monday, the team played at Pine Plains, winning the game 5-2.

Coach Mark Moran said Colleen Trainor scored three goals, with Katie Ruppel and Lauren Trotter scoring individual goals during the game.

Trotter, Ruppel and Danielle Frontaine assisted on Trainor’s goals during the game, and Katelyn Cullian assisted on Trotter’s goal.

“We’re a young team, and this week we are beating the teams we should beat, Moran said. “But we really have to bring things together to beat the good teams.

Over the weekend, the team played in the Andy Bennett Tournament. While they won on Friday against Rhinebeck, 3-1, the next day they lost against Dover, 1-0.

“It was an evenly matched game, but we didn’t have leading scorers playing on it, he said. “It did hurt us defensively.

Despite the one loss, the coach sounded optimistic for the season.

“It’s a good way to start the season, he said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
