Willy Yahn at home after strong Double-A season

SHARON — Willy Yahn, 23, ended his AA baseball season on Friday, Sept. 13, and was already back in the Northwest Corner by Thursday, Sept. 19, and tossing a football around at Community Field in Lakeville with some friends.

He stopped to chat and give a quick update on how his season went and what his plans are for the winter months.

Yahn started last season with the Frederick Keys in Frederick, Md., the Class A-Advanced affiliate for the Baltimore Orioles.

“The first half went really well, my power production was better compared to the last two seasons,” he said, meaning he was hitting more home runs (five), doubles and RBIs.

In the second half of the season, he was moved up to the Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Orioles.

The Baysox won their division and then made it through to the semifinal championships to face the Trenton Thunder (the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees) for five games.

“We lost three out of the five games but it was really fun,” Yahn said.

The final game was Sept. 13 and Yahn returned home to spend some time in Sharon with his parents, Joan and Walter Yahn. Yahn (who graduated from the University of Connecticut in December with a degree in journalism) is writing and reporting for his local newspaper, The Lakeville Journal, until February, when spring training begins.
