Wingard wins state wrestling title, award

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School senior Steven Wingard of Falls Village won the Class S state title in the 182 weight class at the Class S State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 18, along with earning an Outstanding Wrestler Award.After a long day of waiting due to having a bye first round, Wingard wrestled his first match on Feb. 17, pinning in 1:30 against Killingly.Making it into the second day, Wingard pinning his first competitor on Feb. 18 in 30 seconds against Canton. He then made it into the quarterfinals, going against the third seed for his bracket. Wingard came out on top with a 12-7 decision after a hard six minutes of wrestling, which qualified him for the finals.Going against the first seed, Wingard won against Aaron Wing from Griswold in an 8-2 decision.Housatonic placed 22nd out of 37 teams overall.On Feb. 25, Wingard went 4-1 at the Connecticut State Open Wrestling Championships, earning third place.Wingard moves on to the New England’s tournament in Providence, R.I., this weekend.

From research to recognition: Student project honors pioneering Black landowner

Cornwall Consolidated School seventh graders Skylar Brown, Izabella Coppola, Halley Villa, Willow Berry, Claire Barbosa, Willa Lesch, Vivianne DiRocco and Franco Aburto presented a group research project on the life of Naomi Freeman Wednesday, April 23. In attendance were U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Conn., John Mills, president of Alex Breanne Corporation, Cornwall First Selectman Gordon Ridgway, Cornwall Selectman Jennifer Markow and CCS social studies teacher Will Vincent.

CORNWALL — “In Cornwall you have made the decision that everyone here matters and everyone’s story is important,” said U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Waterbury, to the seventh grade class at Cornwall Consolidated School April 23.

Hayes was in attendance to celebrate history on Wednesday as the CCS students presented their group research project on the life of Naomi Cain Freeman, the first Black female landowner in Cornwall.
