Winsted Elks celebrate new slate of officers

WINSTED — The Winsted Elks Lodge 844 held its annual installation of officers March 19, welcoming new Exalted Ruler Tom Wright to replace outgoing leader Damon Papp.The Elks Lodge celebrated numerous accomplishments during the past year, including the launching of a new Antler club, a youth volunteer organization. During his reign as exalted ruler, Papp organized a successful magic show that raised money for the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, and the Elks once again appeared in the town’s major festivals and parades throughout the year.The Winsted Elks held an installation of Antlers members on March 7 and celebrated recently completed interior renovations. In the coming weeks, the Elks will march in the town’s annual Rotary Pet Parade on Saturday, May 21, and the Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30. The Elks will also host the annual Kids’ Fishing Derby Sunday, May 22, at Tatro’s Pond.This weekend, the lodge plays host to the annual Laurel Tea, which organizes candidates for this year’s Laurel Festival, June 10 to 12. Young women who are juniors or seniors at Winsted high schools (Gilbert and Northwestern), or who are residents of Winsted, may participate in the event.With the installation of officers for 2011-12, Wright takes over as exalted ruler for a second time. Papp will serve as leading knight, followed by Loyal Knight Julie Machowski, Lecturing Knight Brian Machowski, Secretary Susan Zuffelato, Treasurer/Tiler Tim Angell, Esquire Debbie Angell, Chaplain Sue Jasch and Inner Guard Johnny Mercer.The Elks House Committee is John Kampartas and Don McCurday, and the lodge trustees are Sue Koloski, Clare Kampartas, Matt Schlosser, Jon Beach and Vincent Ferrante.Fore more information about the Winsted Elks, call the lodge at 860-379-87045.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
