Wonders of Winter show opens in Salisbury on Dec. 14

SALISBURY — The Salisbury Winter Sports Association’s (SWSA) annual ski jump weekend isn’t until February, but people can start getting in the mood starting Saturday, Dec. 14, when Wonders of Winter, an art show and sale, opens at the Academy Building and five other locations in town.

The benefit art sale show is organized by the Salisbury Association. There are 60 works from 34 artists.

Many are of historical significance — Ellen Emmet Rand’s “The Skier” (1927), and works from Beatrix Sagendorph (co-founder and cover artist of Yankee magazine) and Arthur Getz (a New Yorker magazine cover artist and a former Sharon resident) will be on view.

Of the contemporary artists, 21 are from Connecticut, nine from New England, and four are international artists.

Sarah Morrison (co-curator with Allen Blagden and Gerald Stanton) said that several artists created pieces just for the event.

“They’ve painted for us and are thrilled to be able to do it.”

Over 80 percent of the works on display will be for sale at the Academy Building and at Johnnycake Books, NEO Restaurant & Bar, William Pitt/Sotheby’s International Realty, Sweet William’s Coffee Shop & Bakery and The White Hart inn. All sales will be handled at the Academy Building.

There will be a silent auction from Dec. 14, 10 a.m., to Dec. 21 (4 p.m.), for Getz’ “Moonlit Ski Hill.”

The opening event for the show is a Winter Wonders Walk on Dec. 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. Six exhibition locations plus other Salisbury businesses will be open during the walk.

Morrison said she was surprised to learn how many people in town had little or no idea about the SWSA Jumpfest weekend. She said she sees the Wonders of Winter as a way to create more interest in the 94-year tradition of the ski jumps and in Salisbury in general.

And at a time when the country is in a sour mood, “this is positive — it’s building on a unique aspect of Salisbury.”
