Yellowjackets dominate 43-14 in Thanksgiving’s Berkshire Bowl

WINSTED — For the fourth straight year, the co-op varsity football team of The Gilbert School and Northwestern Regional High School beat Housatonic Valley Regional High School at the Berkshire Bowl, held on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24.The Gilbert/Northwestern Yellowjackets pummeled the Housatonic/Wamogo Mountaineers 43-14.“I think we had such a high score because of the team’s determination,” coach Scott Salius said. “This was the last game of the season. All of the seniors wanted to finish their careers with a great showing. Everyone made a great effort. I think the score was the result of a lot of hard work and dedication paying off.”Salius cited senior players Robert Weiss and J.P. Duleuc, along with sophomore Tony Ortiz, as key factors in winning the game.“Robert scored a touchdown reception, which was the first time he had done so in his high school playing career,” Salius said. “J.P. kicked a 35-yard field goal, while Tony scored two touchdowns during the game.”Salius said the team was one win shy of going to the playoffs.Despite this, Salius said he is proud of his team.“It’s fitting that they continued a four-year run of winning the Berkshire Bowl with a big win on Thanksgiving,” he said.
