Approximately 125 or one-fourth of the voters of North Canaan attended the special town meeting held at the town hall Saturday. The meeting was called for the purpose of securing a vote to accept further state aid for highway construction. At the last annual town meeting the town had voted not to build any state road, and this meeting was to rescind that vote. Selectman Hardenburg stated that the contract called for an expenditure of about $4,500, three-fourths of which amount the state was to pay; that the bills paid and those presented for the job amounted to over $11,000, and that there were some more bills to come in. The motion to rescind the vote taken at the last annual town meeting was lost by a vote of 71 to 27, “killing for the present the policy which has been followed in Canaan road construction.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
