Alice M. Fodor

NORTH CANAAN — Alice M. Fodor, 93, died peacefully on Dec. 17, 2011, at her apartment in Geer Village. Her daughter, Jan Dudek, was with her when she passed.She was the widow of George Fodor, to whom she had been married for 67 years. He died in 2007.Mrs. Fodor was born in Erie, Pa., on Feb. 3, 1918, the daughter of Kathryn (Harvey) and Raymond Mason. She grew up in State College, Pa., and Bloomfield, N.J., and graduated from Bloomfield High School. She then went to work for the Prudential Life Insurance Co., where she met her future husband, George Fodor. They were married on May 25, 1940, and settled in Belleville, N.J.When Mr. Fodor returned from military service in World War II, their daughters Susan J. and Janice were born. In 1952, Mr. Fodor’s office transferred him (along with his family) to a new home office in Houston, Texas. During the seven years they lived there, Mrs. Fodor became a Girl Scout leader and was very active in many church activities at St. Christopher Episcopal Church, where the family worshipped. After leaving Texas, she continued to be active in any church they attended.She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Kime of Craig, Colo., and her husband, Robert, and Janice (Fodor) Dudek and her husband, Michael, of Sharon; five grandchildren, Amy L. Wobser and her husband, Donn, of Toledo, Ohio, Jennifer Collins of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Erin R. Collins of Delta, Ohio, Benjamin M. Dudek of Dillon, Colo., and Sarah J. Dudek of Sharon; a brother, Irvin Mason of Grecia, Costa Rica; four great-grandchildren, Alexandra Collins of North Ridgeville, Andrew B. Wobser of Toledo, Madison J. Wobser of Toledo and Abbey Cicero of North Ridgeville; and one great-great-grandchild, Skyler Hlavna of North Ridgeville.Mrs. Fodor was predeceased by her husband and her parents; a younger brother, William; and a sister, Jayne.Services and burial will be held at a later time in State College. Arrangements are under the care of the Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association Hospice, 30A Salmon Kill Road, Salisbury, CT 06068.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
