Amenia Town Board: Composting input, baseball trophy and roof repair

AMENIA— The Town Board held a regular workshop at Town Hall on Thursday, Sept. 3.

Councilpersons Mike DeLango and Stephen Perotti were absent.

Composting

The meeting opened with a composting information presentation from Lindsay Carille from the Dutchess County Department of Planning and Development, Division of Solid Waste.

In May, Anthony Bulfamante visited the board to express his desire to start an organic composting operation on his land at 3501 Route 22.

Carille said the county and solid waste division support composting.

“It’s a great way to recycle leaves and keep them out of landfills,” she said.

Carille added that if regulated properly — and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation would see to that — the facility would produce a minimized odor, albeit an “earthy” one.

Baseball trophies

Recreation Commission member Christine Ford spoke during public comment.

Ford presented Connie Mack baseball Co-coach DJ Reilly with a trophy for his team’s winning performance in its league championship.

“This year, Connie Mack took first place. We haven’t taken first place in I don’t think ever,” she said.

Roof repair

The board approved an $8,250 roof repair estimate from PJ Exteriors, to fix “the upper flat roof” and replace “slates that are missing or loose” on the Town Hall building.

The estimate was one of two bids.

“We made an attempt to get a third bid but there were many companies out there who did not want to deal with the paperwork involved with prevailing wage,” town Supervisor Victoria Perotti said.

Councilperson Gretchen Hitselberger asked if previous roof work completed had “any type of guarantee on it.”

Perotti said this “is completely different.”

“This is all new work?” Hitselberger asked.

Perotti confirmed that it was.

Hitselberger asked where the money would come from; Perotti said from the budget’s maintenance line.

“We have to repair the roof because every time we have a very heavy rain it leaks into the Planning Board room and it leaks into some of the other rooms and if we don’t fix the leak then we’ll have potential mold problems as well,” Perotti said.

Perotti moved to accept the estimate. Councilperson Vicki Doyle seconded.

The vote passed 2-1, with Hitselberger voting no.
