Annie Bananie ice creams: exotic, sweet, enticing

KENT — It’s summer, it’s hot and Anne McAndrew, owner of Annie Bananie Ice Cream, said people are stopping “dead in the tracks” when they see the sign outside offering ice cream. McAndrew gets all of the store’s organic ice cream from Jane’s in Kingston, N.Y. Not only does the local and organic aspect of the store’s products draw customers in, but the exotic flavors such as maple bacon, gingersnap molasses, apricot orange blossom and bourbon pecan are a hit among customers of all ages. The shop also serves grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs. McAndrew said that, so far, this season has been successful as always. The end of school brought in big groups of families with their children ready for their first taste of summer. With their growing success over the past years, Annie Bananie’s has expanded and put in a newly painted hopscotch court along with ring games and hula hoops. Annie Bananie Ice Cream, 5 Bridge St., is open in summer Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

It takes a lot of courage to share your art for the first time and Marilyn Hock is taking that leap with her debut exhibition at Sharon Town Hall on Sept. 12. A realist painter with a deep love for wildlife, florals, and landscapes, Hock has spent the past few years immersed in watercolor, teaching herself, failing forward, and returning again and again to the page. This 18-piece collection is a testament to courage, practice and a genuine love for the craft.

“I always start with the eyes,” said Hock of her animal portraits. “That’s where the soul lives.” This attentiveness runs through her work, each piece rendered with care, clarity, and a respect for the subtle variations of color and light in the natural world.
