In annual Battle of Sexes, victors this year are the men

LAKEVILLE —Waged at the Hotchkiss golf course annually since 1979, the men won the Chamber Pot Challenge for the third year in a row. Undaunted by gray skies, mist and forecasts for worse, 12 die-hards teed off: six men determined to retain the cup and six women focused on recapturing it.

The gender that prevails is the one whose best three players’ scores relative to par are less than the other’s. Even Eileen Peterson’s best round ever was not enough to pull off a victory for the ladies.

Pictured are Jim Kennedy, Hotchkiss Golf Course pro, presenting the cup to the winning threesome: Bill Tourjee (39), Fran Goodhouse (38) and Rolf Schenkel (42). As he had the lowest score, Fran won the “honor of keeping the pot for the next 12 months!

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
