Annual meeting delayed

NORTH CANAAN — The annual town meeting, which would normally have been held already, will not happen before the end of the year.

Board of Finance Chairman Louis Allyn said this week the hold-up is in new formatting of the annual town report, which is the focus of the meeting. There have also been minor issues with the new auditor.

Towns are required at the annual town meeting mainly to present a report of the annual audit of town funds.

Most towns expand the report into a comprehensive look at the town during those months. It typically includes reports submitted from every aspect of town life, including schools, emergency and social services, town offices, boards and commissions and so forth.

The main agenda item for voters to decide on at the annual meeting is whether to accept the report and the audit.

In North Canaan, other business, such as the annual $1 lease of the Little League field, is handled at that meeting.

The meeting might also include appropriations for capital purchases or other pending business. But this year’s agenda has only routine items, at least at this point.

Allyn said he believes state statute requires that the meeting be held before the end of the year, but he said he doesn’t believe there is a penalty to worry about. And so the boards of finance and selectmen have opted to wait, rather than trying to squeeze it in over the holidays.

“We are changing the format of the report so that it can all be done electronically and with technology today, we can have a much better-looking report, Allyn said. “But it’s been a slow conversion.
