Appreciation: Peter Wertheim

Ten days ago, the Sharon Playhouse was delightedly anticipating our Spotlight Gala honoring Bobbie Olsen for her amazing contributions to theater and to us.

Then, with no warning, we were thrust into profound despair over the tragic, unfathomable loss of Peter Wertheim, our extraordinary board member and co-chair of our upcoming Spotlight event, who died unexpectedly at the age of only 39.

These two emotions are incompatible. These two events cannot coexist.

As a result, we are postponing our June 3 Spotlight and, in its place, we invite all friends and colleagues who admired this wonderful young man to come to the Playhouse next Saturday, June 10, at 5:30 p.m. for an informal gathering with wine, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in his memory. There will be no charge.

As for Spotlight, we are rescheduling it for Aug. 19,  starting with a reception at 6 p.m. and including seats for that night’s performance of “The Music Man.” Any reserved June 3 Spotlight tickets will be honored on Aug. 19.

Of course, we will also offer refunds to anyone who asks.

To know Peter was to love him. Whip smart, creative, inventive, sweet and kind, he had the unusual dual ability to both inspire others and soothe them. To be the spirit of abandon, but when necessary, the voice of reason too.

And no one loved a good party better than Peter. Please come and help us celebrate his way too short life.
