Art, craft, grog at library auction

FALLS VILLAGE — The David M. Hunt Library’s annual Auction in the Village is Saturday, Oct. 18, 5 to 8 p.m. at the Center on Main, 103 Main St. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door and they can be purchased at the library, by calling 860-824-7424, or at www.huntlibrary.org.

This is the 13th year of the event, which is a major fundraiser for the library, accounting for about 15 percent of its operating budget.

This year’s auction has live and silent auctions, catering by the Blackberry River Baking Company in North Canaan, music by Vance Cannon, wine, beer and the library’s signature Green Man grog.

The silent auction is between 5 and 7 p.m. The live auction, conducted by Colter Rule, begins at 7:15 p.m. with a broad selection of quality items including artisan crafts, art, workshops; items for the home, kitchen and garden, books, day passes to the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, a Coach bag and a group dinner at the Falls Village Inn.

There is also a baseball signed by Shane Victorino of the Boston Red Sox; crewel pillows by Sarah Clawson; pottery by Diane Schapira; a black birch bowl by Frank Grusauskas; a fly-fishing session with The Lakeville Journal’s Patrick Sullivan; and paintings by Ben Foster, Bob Cronin, Lily Woodworth and John Pirnak (among others).

Library board President Garth Kobal said the auction usually nets about $20,000. “That’s what we’re aiming for.”

The auction “becomes more important each year as costs rise,” Kobal said. Last winter the library had to scramble for some very specific donations to keep the heat on, and the library has continued with building improvements and technology upgrades.
