Asian Kitchen brings two seasoned chefs to Millerton

MILLERTON — New flavors and exotic cuisines have fused together at Millerton Fresh Market’s Asian Kitchen, which opened in the fall and features chefs Kazuhiro Hidaka and Jose Lalby.

While the idea of introducing an Asian cafe into the market was in the works for some time, the plan didn’t come to fruition until a year ago. Once plans got underway, Chris Cho, the owner of Millerton Fresh Market and Sharon Farm Market in Sharon, Conn., approached Hidaka to see if he’d be interested in helping out. Already recognized as the chef behind the award-winning Japanese-style Krazy for Kazu’s dressings, dipping sauces and spreads, Hidaka expressed interest in joining Cho.

Next, Cho reached out Lalby, a former executive chef who previously worked at The Falls Village Inn in Falls Village, Conn., and at Noble Horizons in Salisbury, Conn. When Cho asked if he’d be interested in working with Hidaka, Lalby replied that it would be a pleasure

Located at 122 Route 44 in Millerton, Asian Kitchen made its debut in October and has since captured the interest and appetites of shoppers. Including Hidaka and Lalby, the kitchen operates with four employees and is open Tuesdays through Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Using fresh ingredients, the kitchen menu includes offerings from Japanese cuisine to Korean dishes. Customers can purchase a variety of soba and udon noodle soups, from chicken and beef to shrimp tempura and ramen noodle. In addition to the option of ordering a meat of their choice with rice and fresh vegetables, customers can savor sweet Japanese curry over rice with pork, beef, chicken or salmon. For the Korean style dishes, customers can nibble on dumplings (fried or steamed) and seafood green onion pancakes or venture into new dishes, such as bulgogi (thinly sliced beef tenderloin strips in a Korean BBQ sauce), galbi (Korean BBQ ribs) and japache (a dish made with sweet potato noodles and vegetables).

Along with the chicken teriyaki Japanese dish, customers have especially been drawn to the kitchen’s Bibimbap menu, which allows them to choose their own base (brown rice, white rice or sweet potato noodles), protein, vegetables and sauce.

Beyond its Japanese and Korean cuisines, the kitchen offers roasted chicken, a salad bar, a sushi bar, fresh seafood dishes and European-style meals to satisfy a variety of appetites.

The chefs remarked that they’ve seen customers return on almost a daily basis.

“I just want to see people have happy faces when they eat the food,” Hidaka said, “I think all chefs want that … and it makes me happy too.”

“I’m very happy to be working with Kazu as a chef,” Lalby said.

While Hidaka has acknowledged that his position at Asian Kitchen is temporary, Lalby has envisioned a bright future for the kitchen in Millerton Fresh Market. 

Meals at Asian Kitchen can be made to go or to eat in; there’s a small casual dining section for customers who prefer to stay.

Plein Air Litchfield returns for a week of art in the open air

For six days this autumn, Litchfield will welcome 33 acclaimed painters for the second year of Plein Air Litchfield (PAL), an arts festival produced by Art Tripping, a Litchfield nonprofit.

The public is invited to watch the artists at work while enjoying the beauty of early fall. The new Belden House & Mews hotel at 31 North St. in Litchfield will host PAL this year.
