Bennett dilemma

MILLBROOK — The initial optimism of Village Attorney Rebecca Valk and Building Inspector Ken McLaughlin about cooperation between the village and the developers of the former Bennett College in demolishing the Halcyon Hall complex has ended.

After Valk’s and McLaughlin’s Oct. 14 meeting with Mark Miller, attorney for the development, and Kevin McManus of Blumenthal-Brickman, the developer of the site, Valk and McLaughlin said they felt they had reached an agreement regarding the demolition order issued by the village in January 2010 and upheld by a judge’s determination on Aug. 29.

After the meeting Valk prepared a draft stipulation letter setting out the agreement the parties reached during the Oct. 14 meeting. The draft stipulation letter, while asserting the Oct. 1, 2011, deadline for demolition, set out the ground rules that would enable the developer to seek extensions if delays were caused by third parties and would also avoid additional litigation.

After six weeks with no response from the other side, despite phone calls and e-mails, the deal is reportedly off the table. Valk said she was forced to act and sent a letter dated Jan. 5 to Miller of Veneziano & Associates, the developer’s attorney, reasserting the demolition deadline of Saturday, Oct. 1, withdrawing the offer of a stipulation agreement that offered more flexibility to the developers.

“However, as the village has not received any response to the proposed stipulation prepared by our office, the village is no longer interested in entering into the proposed stipulation,� Valk’s letter states. “I believe it is safe to assume that the concept of a stipulation as to the timeline for demolition is no longer achievable.�

Calls before press deadline to Veneziano & Associates were not successful. Reached at his home, David Blumenthal of Blumenthal-Brickman said he was not aware of the letter and asked to be quoted as saying, “As the developers we are extremely disappointed to hear about this and will work with the village to resolve the matter.�

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
