BOE gives update on search for superintendent

PINE PLAINS — Pine Plains Central School District Board of Education (BOE) President Brian Croghan went off the agenda during the meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 6, to update the public on the search for a replacement for Superintendent Linda Kaumeyer.Kaumeyer submitted her letter of resignation at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, noting that she was retiring after a lengthy career in numerous fields.“I should probably give a little bit of an idea as to where we are in the search process. Everyone knows we’re in the process of the superintendent search as Linda Kaumeyer is retiring at the end of the school year. So far we’re doing quite well in the process,” Croghan said.He noted that there had been a total of 17 applicants for the position.“We’ve had six semi-finalists and now we’re down to the final three candidates, so we’re hoping to finish that process with the final three this week and we’ll see how it goes from there,” he said.Croghan said he was very proud of the response he had received from the candidates in regard to the district as a whole.“Earlier this week we toured the building and got to interact with many of the educators. I’d like to thank them for taking the time to introduce themselves and for being so cordial to the candidates as I took them around. It’s been a very positive experience. They are all extremely impressed with the district, the staff and the models that we all work with. I’m very proud of that and you all should be as well,” he said.Croghan concluded his update by expressing confidence in the process.“I wanted to make everyone aware of where we are. We haven’t really talked much about it. So things are moving along quite nicely,” he said. The board thanked Croghan for addressing the issue and the meeting then moved on to the Superintendent’s Report portion of the agenda (see story, page A1).For more information on the search for the new superintendent, go to www.pineplainsschools.org.

Artist Christy Gast

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
