BOE a no-show at middle school principal interview

WEBUTUCK — Despite members of the Board of Education not being present at a meeting to interview candidates, district Superintendent Richard Johns said there would not be a delay in hiring a new principal for Eugene Brooks Middle School.

According to Johns, board members did not attend the meeting, which was held on Thursday, Oct. 11, because they were not available.

"We went ahead and had the interviews anyway," Johns said. "We did have members from the teacher, administration and parent teams present at the meeting, so I don’t think it will delay the hiring."

This summer, Scott Richards resigned from his post as middle school principal. The board has hired Jerry Husted as interim principal.

When asked about the no-shows, school board president Dale Culver would only say that board members were not consulted when the time for the meeting was set and all of the members had prior commitments. Board member Susan Lounsbury called in sick before the meeting started.

Marty Markonic, who is on the parent committee, said he was angered that board members did not show up at the meeting.

"It’s irresponsible, and there is no reason for this," Markonic said. "It was raining hard that night, but it did not stop other people from attending. They always preach ‘change, change, change,’ but is this the type of change we’re going to do?"

He said that the four candidates who attended the meeting came from as far away as Croton-on-the-Hudson.

Despite the board missing the meeting, Johns said an announcement from the board on the new principal is imminent.

"We are all considering our options, and I will leave it cryptic like that," he said. "This is kind of unusual circumstances that we’re hiring a new principal during the school year, but I will have an announcement within the next few days."

During the summer, the district has had to find replacements for principals at all of its schools. Former Webutuck and Amenia elementary schools principal Michael O’Neil retired from the district in June to work at two schools in Vermont; former Webutuck high school principal Kenneth Sauer resigned in July; and Richards resigned in August, just before the school year started.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
