Bombers softball falls in MHAL semi

NEW PALTZ — Bombers girls softball came to an end last Thursday, in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL) tournament, as the team lost 6-3 to Rhinebeck at SUNY New Paltz.

Skyler Nuccio led off the game with a triple for Stissing Mountain High School, starting a three-run first inning for the Bombers.

Unfortunately, that was the last inning the Bombers were able to put numbers up on the board. Rhinebeck added two of their own in the bottom of the first, and the runs trickled in throughout the remaining six innings.

Alexis Boucher, who pitched the entire game for Stissing Mountain, struck five and walked three. Sarah Lima was the only Bomber with multiple hits, going two for three.

“Mitchie was just overpowering, coach Les Funk said after the game, referring to Rhinebeck’s pitcher Megan Mitchie, who retired 16 of Stissing Mountain’s batters. “Without a doubt she’s the most challenging pitcher we face. Her location and the stuff she does, it’s unlike anything we’ve seen and it shows in the teams she’s beaten.

Yesterday a seeding meeting was held for sectionals, after this paper’s deadline. Funk said he expected the Bombers to be seeded first — the team finished the regular season with a record of 15-4, 11-1 in MHAL — which would give them a favorable bracket. They wouldn’t face Rhinebeck until the finals.

“If we’re fortunate enough to see her again, we have to put the ball in play more, he said. “Their defense only had to make five outs against us. But the good thing is, we will have nine days until we would have to play them again, and that gives us some time to prepare. It will be the fourth time we’ve seen her this year, and not that it’s going to be easier, but the girls will definitely know what they’re up against.

Pine Plains will be playing a four-team scrimmage Thursday, May 27, at 4 p.m. at home against Highland, Kingston and Roundout. Each team will play each other for four innings, 12 innings total.

The scrimmage is a benefit for Carmen Congelli, a Marlboro player diagnosed with cancer and currently undergoing treatment. Donations will be collected at the game.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
