Building site for an affordable home available

KENT — Kent Affordable Housing (KAH) has obtained a 1-acre lot at 19 Maple St. Extension and will offer it on a 99-year lease so a family of modest income can build a home there.

The land will remain in the ownership of KAH and will be nominally leased to the applicant, who would own the home, significantly reducing the cost of building a home for the family.

The lot previously had a home that had been abandoned and foreclosed. KAH purchased the property and determined the home was in such disrepair, it was not worth remodeling and tore it down in September. They also removed several environmental obstacles and connected the property to the town sewer and water systems.

In order to be eligible for the lease, the homeowners must have a combined income lower than the median income for Litchfield County, roughly $80,000 for a family of four and $70,000 for a family of two. The family must also receive financing for a mortgage and be able to have the resources to choose, build and maintain the home.

The parcel program sponsored by the KAH will be the second in town, with one already located near Kent Center School in the center of the village.

Applications are currently being accepted. For more information email info@kentaffordablehousing.org.
