Burglar hits Millerton Getty station

MILLERTON — Last Thursday night would have been a peaceful one in Millerton if it were not for the fact that somewhere around midnight, or even later, a burglary was in progress at the Getty gas station on Route 44.

According to Trooper Matthew Landon of the New York State Police, which is handling the case, the crime happened after the service station was closed for the night on Oct. 23.

“Someone went in and took money from the cash register, Landon said. “It was closed at the time.

“It’s not good, said Thomas Lopez, who works at the Getty station, adding that the full-service gas station was robbed three years ago. “When I came in this morning and opened the place I turned off the alarm and could see the window was broken. There was glass all over, and the first thing I did was check the money.

Upon checking the money, Lopez discovered $3,352 missing. The state police did not confirm the amount of money taken from the register.

“The first thing I did was call the boss, and he called the cops, Lopez said. “Now they’re working on it.

Les Slater owns Millerton Repair, an  automotive repair shop he rents space for out of the Getty station. He said he was surprised to learn of the crime.

“It’s the second time since I’ve been here, and I’ve been here three years, Slater said. “Oh yeah, I was surprised, why wouldn’t I be? I just found out the place was broken into. I wasn’t expecting anybody to break in; normally, it’s a good little town.

After the break-in three years ago, Slater said the station was outfitted with security cameras and a burglar alarm. There’s been no word yet on whether the equipment was working last Thursday night during the burglary.

Although surprised, Slater said such crimes are slowly seeping into rural areas.

“It’s only a matter of time, he said. “It happens to all towns.

“But you can’t just dog a town because of a break-in, he added. “I’ve lived here a long time because I like the town. And it’s not that common, at least I don’t think so.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the state police at 845-877-3669.

Meanwhile, over the border in neighboring Connecticut, there have been a couple of recent break-ins. The Cornwall Package Store reported a burglary Oct. 20. The incident at the Kent Road (Route 7) business is under investigation. Damage was also reported Oct. 20 at Sharon Package Store on West Main Street in Sharon. The front door was damaged. That incident is also under investigation.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
