Caleen 'Cookie' (Hallock) Degreenia


WEST CORNWALL — Caleen "Cookie" Mary (Hallock) Degreenia, 64, of Railroad Street, died Sept. 25, 2007. She was the widow of Melvyn Floyd Degreenia.

Mrs. Degreenia was born March 5, 1943, in Sharon, the daughter of the late Mary Ellen (Mott) Nodine and Calvin Harding Hallock.

She attended local schools and was a 1961 graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

She was the postmaster of the Cornwall Post Office and a recipient of the Cornwall 2005 VFW Citizenship Award.

She is survived by a son, Michael Edward Degreenia of Cornwall Village; two sisters, Rosemary and Betty; two brothers, William and John; and a multitude of loving friends within the surrounding villages of West Cornwall.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Lorie Ann Degreenia.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Ellsworth Burying Grounds. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Cornwall Rescue Squad, PO Box 165, West Cornwall, CT 06796.

The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of arrangements.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
