Carnival was a winner

Success — what a sweet sound. Our second Lions-sponsored carnival took place at Eddie Collins Field on Route 22 in Millerton from Thursday, June 2, through Sunday, June 5. The Commerford and Sons Carnival from Goshen, Conn., provided the entertainment and we provided great food, great location and, dare we say, great weather. And, it was all made possible by great volunteers. Whether local organization members or those just wishing to lend a hand, we appreciate you one and all. Everyone worked together to make this event such a success and we are honored to be part of such a fine community. Many Lions returned to Eddie Collins Field on Tuesday, June 7, to honor member William A. Shaughnasey, who passed away exactly a year ago. It was a bittersweet memorial as we shared stories of Bill with his family: Dan, Rose and William Shaughnasey of Hudson; Tom and Judi Welch of North Canaan; Jerry and Margaret Sawyer of Great Barrington; and Woody and Kay Hoyt of Ancram. Bill Shaughnasey joined the Lions Club on Aug. 1, 1975, and was a dairy farmer and lifelong resident of Copake. He was a dedicated Lion and remained actively involved in meetings, events and fundraisers with a 100 percent attendance record for every year of his 20-year active membership. How impressive. Not many of us can make that claim. It was his dedication, outstanding service and loyalty to our club that made us pleased to submit his application as a Life Member of Lions International several years ago. Very few members obtain this status and we felt him more than worthy of the honor. Vice President Michael Jordan stood guard with the Lions flag alongside the tree planted in Bill’s memory during the short but poignant memorial; the inscribed stone donated by Valentine’s Monument Works adding a special touch. His nephew told us of transporting his uncle to meetings when his eyesight became too poor to travel alone, and the fact that he requested to take his Lions pins and certificate of lifetime membership to be with him through eternity. Now, that is true dedication. His family was presented with flowers arranged in the Lions colors of blue and yellow, and additional Lions pins for their loved one’s collection. Prayers adjourned our time together, and we all said goodbye to a fine individual and dear friend to many. May he rest in peace. Our most recent meeting was Wednesday, June 22, at American Legion Post 178, when our 11-month raffle began. Good luck ticket holders. Come join us at our next major fundraising event in September, at our annual barbecue/silent auction. Anyone wishing to donate an item or help in any way can contact Stacey Moore at 518-789-4508 or Melanee at 518-789-3365. Thank you for your support.Till next time.Melanee Mayville lives, works and writes in Millerton. She has been a member of the Lions Club since 2008.

A blessing for pets — and a lifeline for their health
Lazarus, a Eurasian eagle owl, poses with Dr. Laura, his longtime handler. The rescue raptor — known as the event’s “wow factor” for his striking presence and six-foot wingspan — will appear as the Raptor Ambassador at Rhinebeck’s Blessing of the Animals.

For many pet owners, animals are family. On Saturday, May 30, that bond will be celebrated in a uniquely practical and heartfelt way when the Blessing of the Animals returns to Third Lutheran Evangelical Church in Rhinebeck alongside a free rabies vaccination clinic hosted by Hudson Valley Animal Rescue & Sanctuary.

The event, scheduled from noon to 4 p.m., is free for Dutchess County residents and open to dogs, cats and domestic ferrets three months and older. While the clinic itself provides an important public health service, organizers say the day has become about much more than vaccinations.
