Celebration of winter season in athletic banquet March 31

FALLS VILLAGE — More than a hundred athletes and coaches gathered at Housatonic Valley Regional High School on Tuesday, March 31, for the winter sports banquet.

Awards were given to students who participated in alpine skiing, girls and boys basketball, ice hockey, swimming and wrestling.

At the beginning of the event, school Principal Gretchen Foster expressed her appreciation for student athletes and leaders.

“I have truly enjoyed watching all of you grow,� Foster said. “You are an amazing group of Housy athletes. I know this just doesn’t happen by itself. You need to have positive mentors and coaches. We have them here at Housatonic. It is our collaborative efforts that leads to our success at the school.�

Athletic Director David Roach in turn thanked Foster for her school sports spirit.

“I don’t think I am the number one fan here because the number one fan is Principal Foster,� Roach said. “She is always in the stands leading cheers, and she even goes to the state tournament games with us.�

In boys basketball, Donyell Williams won the Tyburski Award for best freshman. The most improved athlete award went to Cory Christensen, and the most valuable player award went to Will Kennedy.

In girls basketball, the Tyburski Award went to Jamie Conklin, the most improved award went to Danielle Kearns and Paxton Thornton won the most valuable player award.

In wrestling, Steve Wingard won the Tyburski Award, Brad Visconti won the most improved award and the most valuable player award went to Sam Schwartz.

For ice hockey, the Tyburski Award went to R.J. Thompson, the most improved award went to Rob Bamberry and the most valuable player award went to Kevin Cantele.

For swimming, the Tyburski Award went to Regan Carroll, the most improved award went to both Travis Derr and Matthew Rogers while the most valuable player award was shared by team tri-captains (with Emily Parker) Sam Cadman and Tim Kruger.

In alpine skiing, the Tyburski Award went to Will Perotti while the most valuable player award went to Evelyn Struzynski.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
