CMT scores: Math is a problem for some students

SHARON —  Students at Sharon Center School generally did well,  according to the school principal, on the reading and writing portions of the Connecticut Mastery Test, which they took in the spring (results were released last month).

But mathematics test scores for last year’s third- and fourth-graders were low.

Karen Manning, principal of Sharon Center School, wrote via e-mail that she is proud of the school’s test scores.

“We have started to analyze these results, with a lens toward informing instructional practices and developing individualized responses for students,†Manning wrote. “[We will] have ongoing meetings with students, faculty and grade levels in an ongoing effort to improve the achievements of all students. Our focus is on the student, the test strand and the specific skill necessary to perform at or above goal on the strand.â€

The Mastery Test scores are used by schools to track the performance of individual students as they move through elementary school. If individual students seem to be struggling with one academic area, special help can be given to correct the problem.

Scores for most grades can be found online at cmtreports.com. However, not all grades are included. The state only lists scores for classes with 20 or more students. This is in part because the scores of one or two children can sway the entire percentage ranking of an entire grade.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
