Daphne (Hurlbutt) Barna

SALISBURY — Daphne (Hurlbutt) Barna, 65, of Middlebury, Conn., died March 28, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Daphne was the wife of Peter Barna and the sister of Donald Hurlbutt of Salisbury.

Daphne was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on July 12, 1943, daughter of the late Dorothy Caroline (Siegle) and George Williamson Hurlbutt.

She graduated from the Mary A. Burham School, class of 1961, in Northampton, Mass., and from Bennett College, class of 1963, in Millbrook, N.Y.  She worked as a pharmacy technician for Middlebury Pharmacy, and later for RX Care Pharmacies Inc., until her retirement in 2008.

Daphne was a devout member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury, where she served on the altar guild and church’s vestry, and chaired the “Gingerbread Village.†She also served on the board of directors for St. George’s Day School. She was an avid gardener and her passion was flowers.

In addition to her husband, Peter,  of 37 years, and her brother, Donald, Daphne is survived by her son, Jeffrey Barna of Greenville, N.C.; her daughter, Katherine Gonyo and her husband, Kevin, of West Chazy, NY; her two other brothers, George and Peter Ohlweiler of Vermont, and her sister-in-law, Sharon Hurlbutt of Salisbury; two granddaughters, Lauren and Adrienne Gonyo; and three nephews, Dan and Dave Hurlbutt and Alex Barna.

A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, May 2, at 11 a.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours. Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home in Waterbury has charge of arrangements.

Cornwall Consolidated School seventh graders Skylar Brown, Izabella Coppola, Halley Villa, Willow Berry, Claire Barbosa, Willa Lesch, Vivianne DiRocco and Franco Aburto presented a group research project on the life of Naomi Freeman Wednesday, April 23. In attendance were U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Conn., John Mills, president of Alex Breanne Corporation, Cornwall First Selectman Gordon Ridgway, Cornwall Selectman Jennifer Markow and CCS social studies teacher Will Vincent.

CORNWALL — “In Cornwall you have made the decision that everyone here matters and everyone’s story is important,” said U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Waterbury, to the seventh grade class at Cornwall Consolidated School April 23.

Hayes was in attendance to celebrate history on Wednesday as the CCS students presented their group research project on the life of Naomi Cain Freeman, the first Black female landowner in Cornwall.
