Dennis H. Mintz Sr.

North Canaan — Dennis H. Mintz Sr., 74, died peacefully Oct. 30, 2008, with his family at his bedside, at the New York University Medical Center in New York City. He was the husband for 53 years of Mary (Corna) Mintz.

Mr. Mintz was a longtime resident of North Canaan. He was born in Sheffield, Mass., on May 19, 1934, the son of the late Dorothy (Ball) and John Mintz.

Mr. Mintz served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the 1950s and was honorably discharged in 1954. During his time in Korea, he was assigned to the 726th T TRK CO. His medals included the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal.

Mr. Mintz worked as a caretaker for the Lufkin Estate in Lakeville for more than 10 years. He also was a 20-year member of the North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Mintz is survived by his three sons, Dennis Mintz Jr. and his wife, Tammy, of Housatonic, Mass., John R. Mintz and his wife, Kerri, of North Canaan and Raymond H. Mintz of Manhattan; his brother, Rolland Mintz; his sister, Paulene Wright; eight grandchildren, Josh Mintz of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Collin Mintz of Pittsfield, Mass., Chloe and Zachary Mintz of Housatonic, Jennifer Calderone of Great Barrington, Kasey Arnold of North Canaan, William Soper of Pittsifled, and Chris Soper of Berkley, Calif.; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Mintz was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Patricia “Patty� (Mintz) Soper; his sister, Lois Mallory; and his brother, William Mintz.

Graveside services with military honors were held Nov. 5 in the Ashley Falls Cemetery, Ashley Falls. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home, North Canaan.

SALISBURY — Ken Gloss, proprietor of the Brattle Book Shop in Boston and a fixture on public television’s “Antiques Roadshow” entertained a bevy of bibliophiles at the Scoville Memorial Library Wednesday, April 17 with stories from the book trade.

He also gave quick assessments of books to about a dozen people after his remarks.

Housing group seeks approval of land transfer

KENT — The plan to develop about 10 units of affordable housing on town land inched forward this week following a lightly attended April 12 public hearing concerning the transfer of 1.16 acres of land from the town to Kent Affordable Housing (KAH).

The hearing gave residents a chance to comment on a conditional approval for the transfer, which would be done at no cost to KAH. The proposal still faces a town meeting vote.
