Dog festival to raise money for Harlem Valley Chamber of Commerce

MILLERTON — The Harlem Valley Chamber of Commerce, working with Ledgewood Kennel, will host a two-day Festival of Dogs July 11 and 12 at Ledgewood Kennel here.

The festival will include canine sporting events, pet portraits and food prepared by the Round Tuit Restaurant, the Millerton Fire Department and other local nonprofits.

Admission is free. Small fees ($5 to $10) are charged to enter a dog (or pack) into dog show, grooming demonstrations, dock diving events (with a special presentation by the Hudson Valley DockDogs), agility competitions or the time-honored tradition of flyball and Frisbee catching.

The showings are less on the serious side and include categories such as “Twins at Heart,†where the judges decide which pet looks the most like its owner, or “Outstanding Feature,†where the pet’s long tail or perkiest ears could net a blue ribbon.

Judges and hosts for the events include Bill Rasweiller from Copake Veterinary Hospital, veterinarian Julian Strauss and Eddie Ross, former editor for “Martha Stewart Living†and finalist from the TV show Top Design.

Joe Loverro and the Q103 radio team will be broadcasting live on Saturday, when the Millerton Fire Department will grill barbecue favorites.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Harlem Valley Chamber Scholarship Fund.

“We’re excited about this festival,†said Ken Hale, president of the Harlem Valley Chamber. “This is an opportunity for us to work with our local businesses to showcase our beautiful region and an opportunity for us to raise money for scholarships for the local high schools in our area. In today’s tough economic climate the chamber believes that helping students to continue their education is an integral part of doing business here in the Harlem Valley.â€

The festival will run on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. at 693 Smithfield Road in Millerton. Owners can see a full list of events and register online at harlemvalleychamber.org or at ledgewoodkennel.com. Rabies certificates are required for all dogs coming to the show.

For more information on the event, visit the chamber’s Web site or call Chip Barrett, co-owner of Ledgewood Kennel, at 914-474-7695.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
