DOT repairs damaged areas of Route 199

PINE PLAINS — Much to the relief of frequent drivers on Route 199, the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) is repairing the road this month.

According to Gina DiSarro, the public information officer for the department’s Region 8 Hudson Valley region, department crews are patching and smoothing potholes and rough areas.

DiSarro said the work is budgeted via a standard maintenance line, set up in anticipation that repair work will be necessary following winter, wear-down and other natural or weathering conditions.

Up until last month, the department addressed potholes using a temporary “cold patch system,” DiSarro said.

Now that temperatures are warm enough, pot holes can be filled with a hot, permanent mixture.

According to a brochure available at www.dot.ny.gov, “High-performance, asphalt cold-patch mixtures are used to fill potholes during the winter. Permanent pavement repairs are undertaken during the construction season.”

DiSarro said there are no plans for repaving Route 199 at this time.

Elsewhere in the Harlem Valley, the DOT plans to “patch and repair portions of Route 44 with the hot mix in the coming weeks,” DiSarro said.

Road work is weather permitting, and schedules may change based on department demands.

Speeding fines are doubled in work zones, according to the DOT.
