Effect artist Tyler Green finds the beauty on the outside

WINSTED — Tyler Green, a 2014 contestant in the SYFY television show “Face Off,” has opened a studio in the Whiting Mills building on Holabird Avenue.

The former mill is home to dozens of artists, who create everything from soaps and candles to book covers to gallery-worthy artworks.

Green will be using his studio space to make masks, teach special effects makeup and also create medical prosthetics.

The Litchfield native said he was inspired from a young age by the work of Jim Henson.

“When I was young, I saw The Muppets, ‘The Dark Crystal’ and ‘Labyrinth.’ I loved escaping into other worlds, and the characters seemed so real to me. When I was young I didn’t even realize I could make a career in creating monsters and other characters.”

After graduating from Litchfield High School, Green enrolled in Tom Savini’s Special Makeup Effects Program in Monessen, Penn.

Savini created makeup and prosthetic effects for “Friday the 13th,” “Creepshow” and many other classic horror films.

One thing that Green learned is that makeup and masks are more than superficial coverings.

“I create a biography in my mind as I put a monster or a character together. I think about where the character lives. It all manifests itself from there.”

Green opened his studio in Whiting Mills because he fell in love with the building after visiting it a year ago.

“I have a fascination with mill buildings because of the rustic feel of them,” he said. “I wanted to open a studio where there was a community and I feel there is a strong community here. You can feel the creativity in the walls of this building.”

Green said he will also offer classes in special effects makeup.

“It doesn’t matter if the students are beginners or more advanced, I can help anyone find creativity and unleash it.”
