Elizabeth 'Betty' F. (Foley) Riva

NORTH CANAAN — Elizabeth “Betty� F. (Foley) Riva, 86, of South Canaan Road died Dec. 9, 2010, at Charlotte-Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, surrounded by her family. She was the widow of Angel G. Riva, who passed on in 1999. Mr and Mrs. Riva were wed Feb. 9, 1946, in North Canaan.

Betty was born March 19, 1924, in North Canaan, the daughter of the late Elizabeth (McCormick) and Michael Nugent Foley.

Betty was employed for more than 25 years as the executive secretary for the admissions department of the Salisbury School.

Prior to that she had been employed as a telephone operator for New England Telephone in North Canaan.

Betty was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in North Canaan and a member of the Daughter’s of Isabella of St. Joseph Church. She was also a member of the Canaan Mother’s Club, the Geer Auxiliary and the Geer Singers and the Northwest Professional Women’s Club.

Betty’s two great joys in life were her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and going shopping.

She is survived by her son, David M. Riva and his companion, Dina M. Segalla, both of Colebrook; two daughters, Betsy R. Devino and her husband, Mike, of North Canaan and Lynette R. Godburn and her husband, Bill, of Cromwell; eight grandchildren, Michael, Jared, Kurt, Matthew, Katie, Lisa, Erin and Christopher; six great-grandchildren, Sean, Gabriel, Henry, Hailey, Caitlin and Anna; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on Dec. 13 in St. Joseph Church.

Burial followed the Mass in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
