Every quarter counts

PINE PLAINS — While the Stissing Sprint Triathlon was drawing to a close at Stissing Lake last Saturday, the Heart of Pine Plains Community Center was just gearing up for its own fundraiser at Peck’s Market in town.

A large map of the triathlon course was posted in front of HOPP’s table at Peck’s, where volunteers Anne Cabral and Jennifer Mosher were collecting quarters to glue onto the map. The goal was to be able to trace out the course of the triathlon in shiny coins.

HOPP is trying to raise money to purchase a bus to transport seniors, the two explained. A handicapped-accessible bus could pick up seniors who would be otherwise unable to travel.

“We’re hoping to do some larger scale fundraising, Mosher added.

One hundred and twenty-five feet would do it, Mosher said, or $375 when the change was added up.

“People have been very generous so far, she added. “We have a good community.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
