Exciting games are sure to round out the season

Last week’s record, 11-5; for the season, 137-71. Pick of the Week, 2-0; for the season, 13-2.

I had another double-digit week at 11-5, plus I hit both of my Picks of the Week. Not bad, if I do say so myself. With just three weeks left in the season, there are still plenty of teams that have a chance to make the playoffs, and that usually leads to some exciting ball games. Teams that are involved in the playoff race have to play like it’s a playoff game, which adds to the drama.

Here’s how I see this week’s action playing out.

Thursday, Dec. 15

Jacksonville at Atlanta — The Jags threw up a ton of points last week, but they’ll have trouble doing that against the Falcons. Atlanta is solid on both sides of the ball, and I like them to win this one, 27-17.

Saturday, Dec. 17

Dallas at Tampa Bay — The Bucs continue to slide while the Cowboys are in a must-win situation after a tough loss to the Giants. I’ll stick with the Cowboys in this one, 33-20.

Sunday, Dec. 18

Cincinnati at St. Louis — Although their chances are slim, the Bengals still have a shot at the playoffs. That should be enough incentive to win this game, 23-20.

Miami at Buffalo — Neither team is in the hunt, so I’m going with the cold weather team at home. Buffalo wins, 24-20.

Washington at New York Giants — I should be picking the Redskins in this game, but I can’t. Right now the Giants’ quarterback, Eli Manning, is playing the best football of his career, and that should be enough to overcome the team’s suspect defense. I like the Giants in this one, 30-17.

Tennessee at Indianapolis — As I said last week, why mess up a perfect season? The Titans will prevail in this one, 23-13.

Seattle at Chicago — You Bears fans better be careful in this game. The Seahawks are still alive in the playoff race and cannot be taken lightly. With that said, however, its awfully tough to beat the Bears at home, so I’ll stick with them, 20-16.

Green Bay at Kansas City — This is easy and my Pick of the Week. The Packers continue to roll, 38-10.

Carolina at Houston — The Panthers will play tough behind Cam Newton, but the Texans are now focused on getting ready for the playoffs. I like Houston in this one, 31-24.

New Orleans at Minnesota — The Saints cannot afford a letdown at this point in the season while the Vikings continue to flounder. I’ll stick with New Orleans in this one, 37-23.

Detroit at Oakland — Oakland has been slipping while the Lions seem to have gotten back on track. Detroit plays well on the road, so I’m sticking with them in this one, 27-23.

Cleveland at Arizona — The Browns will show up and play tough defense, but that won’t be enough to overcome the Cards. I’ll stick with Arizona, 24-17.

New York Jets at Philadelphia — It seems like every week there is one of these games that puzzles me. I know the Jets have been playing well, but the Eagles can be dangerous with Mike Vick back at the helm. With that said, however, I’m still going with the Jets, 24-23.

New England at Denver — If there was ever a heart bet, this is it. I know the mighty Patriots are a clear favorite, but I’m officially in Tebow’s corner. I’ll take the Broncos in an upset, 24-20.

Baltimore at San Diego — I don’t think the Ravens travel that well, so the fact that the Chargers need this win badly is enough for me. I’ll take the Chargers, 27-24.

Monday, Dec. 19

Pittsburgh at San Francisco — It appears that the 49ers have slipped a little while the Steelers are rolling along just fine. Pittsburgh wins, 27-19.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

Oscar Lock, a Hotchkiss senior, got pointers and encouragement from Tim Hunter, stewardship director of The Sharon Land Trust, while sawing buckthorn.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
