FFA members are all smiles during annual awards event at HVRHS

FALLS VILLAGE — The cafeteria at Housatonic Valley Regional High School was packed Friday night, Nov. 21, with FFA students and their families enjoying a banquet prior to the awards ceremony in the auditorium.

“These are such great kids, said Principal Gretchen Foster, loading a plate. “They work so hard, and have such enthusiasm.

Prior to the awards ceremony in the auditorium, sophomore Arielle Betti, the chapter’s historian, attempted to fix the hair of senior Jake Blass, the chapter sentinel, to no avail.

“Stand still! she commanded.

Moments later, any attempt at hair management evaporated as Blass did a running leap and kick when introduced to the crowd.

Betti was excited to see representatives of FFA chapters from outside the region. “I don’t think we’ve ever had kids from New York before, she said before tearing off on yet another last-minute duty.

Agriculture education teacher David Moran noted that the production nights for wreaths and other holiday items are Thursday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m.

“It’s a great time. The whole community shows up to make and decorate wreaths and partake of seasonal goodies, Moran said. It’s also a chance to learn from experienced hands how to make wreaths, roping and other traditional holiday decorations. Everyone is invited to participate.

The annual  holiday sale of trees, poinsettias, wreaths, roping and more begins Wednesday, Dec. 3, and runs through Tuesday, Dec. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Housatonic greenhouse. Proceeds benefit the FFA program.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
