Fire Department hosts students for open house

NORFOLK —  As part of the statewide Volunteer Firefighter Day, the Norfolk Fire Department held its open house on Sunday, April 23.

At the event, the department operated an extrication drill for Emergency Medical Medical Technician (EMT) students from The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville.

Students learned from department members about extrication tools and skills.

Two donated cars were used in the drill with some of the students playing the role of victims while other students played the role of rescuers.

“With EMT training you are teaching teenagers a life-long skill,” Assistant Fire Chief Jonathan Barbagallo said. “If you get teenagers hooked in young, they have the opportunity to not only work as an EMT, but also a paramedic or a firefighter.”

Barbagallo said the department currently has 25 members.

“We are always looking for more,” he said. “We are also always looking for teenagers from 14 years old to 18 years old to enter our Explorer program. If there are any teenagers interested in learning about emergency skills, this is the place to do it.”
