Fitness as a way to live a better life

Alex Stamatiou rides motorcycles, sails boats and races cars. But what she is most passionate about is fitness.

A first-generation American of Greek descent, Stamatiou is originally from the Boston area. She came to northwest Connecticut to live closer to the racetrack at Lime Rock Park in Salisbury, where she was involved in the auto racing industry. In addition to being a driver and managing professional race teams, she owned her own race data and media company.  

Stamatiou’s interest in fitness began after experiencing the positive impacts of changing her own eating and exercise habits. 

“I was young and I felt terrible. I had digestive issues that interfered with my daily life,” she recalled. “I decided to completely change my diet and began doing regular physical activity.”

Stamatiou eats whole foods that include lots of lean protein and plenty of leafy greens. She stays away from fatty, sugary foods as much as possible. She jogs or bikes several times each week for cardio activity, and lifts weights for strength training. 

“After that, I felt so much better. It was like I was a new person. My digestive issues went away,” she said. After realizing the benefits of her own lifestyle change, she knew she wanted to share that transformative power with others for a living.

Stamatiou sold her racing company four years ago to focus on her career in fitness full-time. She has now been a personal trainer for the past seven years. She provides her clients with strength and mobility training, enhanced flexibility, body sculpting, cardio fitness and nutritional and weight-loss guidance, tailoring each session to her clients’ personal needs and goals.

“Some people think that working with a personal trainer is like working with a drill sergeant,” she said. 

“It is not like that at all. There is no yelling involved,” she chuckled. “I give gentle encouragement and I welcome clients of all physical ability levels.” 

Having done a two-year internship at a rehabilitation center, Stamatiou is able to modify workouts to accommodate people with injuries or limited mobility.

Stamatiou is offering a free personal consultation and evaluation or a free group training session during the months of November and December.

“Every day I wake up excited to meet with my clients and help them reach their goals. Training others brings so much joy to my life. I couldn’t imagine doing anything more satisfying,” she said.

After moving to West Cornwall in 2012, we were given a thoughtful housewarming gift: the 1997 edition of “Dirr’s Hardy Trees and Shrubs.” We were told the encyclopedic volume was the definitive gardener’s reference guide — a fact I already knew, having purchased one several months earlier at the recommendation of a gardener I admire.
