Forget about the preseason hype

Last week, 9-7; for the season, 20-12

Pick of the Week: 1-0; for the season, 1-1

Wow, last week was a tough week, to say the least. Preseason favorites like Dallas, New England, Baltimore and Minnesota all took it on the chin. At least I hit my Pick of the Week, or it would have been worse.

The time has come to discard all the preseason hype and start looking at teams based on performance in real games. Let’s get right to it.

Sunday, Sept. 26

Pittsburgh at Tampa Bay — Rarely do I go against my Steelers, and you saw what happened last week. The Bucs are looking pretty good at this stage and they might just catch the Steelers napping. This should be a good close game, but I’ll stick with the Steelers, 19-17.

New York Giants at Tennessee — The Giants didn’t look very good last week, and I don’t think the Titans will lose two games in a row at home. I’m sticking with Tennessee, 24-21.

Detroit at Minnesota — If the Vikings don’t win this week, you can start the countdown until Favre makes an early exit into retirement. I’ll go with the Vikings, 28-24.

Atlanta at New Orleans — The Falcons are coming off a big win, while the Saints managed to squeeze by the 49ers on Monday night. Atlanta can win this game, but I won’t pick against the Champs until they have a loss. I’ll take New Orleans, 24-20.

Cincinnati at Carolina — If the Panthers are this bad, head coach John Fox’s job might be in jeopardy. The Bengals remain a mystery to me, but they should have enough to pick up a road win. I like Cincy, 31-17.

Buffalo at New England — The Bills are struggling, as usual, and now must face the Pats after a loss to the Jets. This is my Pick of the Week: New England wins big, 33-13.

Cleveland at Baltimore — The Browns are in the same position as the Bills, and their fate will be the same. I’ll go with the Ravens, 23-17.

San Francisco at Kansas City — I’ve always liked San Francisco as a city, but I’m not sure the niners are up for Kansas City’s “here we come attitude. KC takes it, 17-14.

Dallas at Houston — Wow. If the Cowboys lose this one, Wade Philips might find himself in the unemployment line. There’s a new sheriff in Texas and he resides in Houston. I’ll take the Texans, 24-19.

Philadelphia at Jacksonville — Regardless of who started the season as the number-one quarterback, Michael Vick has earned the right to start another game for the Eagles. I’ve got a hunch that Vick wins his second straight on the road, 27-24.

Washington at St. Louis — The Redskins must overcome last week’s collapse against the Texans or they could be in trouble. The Rams are improving but they’re not there yet. I’ll take the Skins, 27-23.

Indianapolis at Denver — The Colts are favored but they best not take this game lightly. Denver is improved, but I don’t think they can handle Peyton and his high-powered offense. I’ll take the Colts, 28-19.

Oakland at Arizona — Both of these teams have had trouble scoring while at the same time they both give up a lot of points. Neither of these teams is going anywhere, but I’m pulling for the Raiders anyway. Oakland wins this one, 23-21.

San Diego at Seattle — The Chargers played much better this past week, while the Seahawks didn’t. Seattle will be tough at home, but I’m sticking with San Diego, 30-24.

New York at Miami — The Jets appear to have the Patriots’ number, but can they go on the road and beat a solid Dolphin team? I don’t think so. I’ll take Miami, 20-17.

Monday, Sept. 27

Green Bay at Chicago — We know the Packers are good, but how about the resurgent Chicago Bears? This should be one of the better games this week. I’m going with a hunch. I like the Bears to upset the Packers, 23-21.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
