Former Millbrook mayor charged in minor’s sex case

MILLBROOK— Donald Briggs, former mayor of Millbrook, was charged by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office in the beginning of this month, with having sexual contact with a minor under the age of 17.

Briggs, 65, was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual acts, both felonies. The minor was not related to Briggs, according to police.

The former mayor was brought to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond. He was released on the $10,000 bail and was due to appear in the Town of Washington Court on Friday, Dec. 16, but the case was transferred to another court, which has not yet been disclosed.

Briggs served two two-year terms as mayor of Millbrook prior to 2007. In the late 1980s he was president of the Millbrook Board of Education.

The arrest was made after an investigation of two weeks, also involving the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office and the Dutchess County Child Advocacy Center.

Briggs lost his wife of 43 years in January of 2016; he is the father of three children and grandfather to several.

Anyone having any information pertaining to the matter is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Detective Bureau at 845-486-3820 or the Sheriff’s Office tip line at 845-605-2583; ask for Deputy Sheriff Ben Sistarenik.
