Former Students Take Over Webutuck Coaching Duties

WEBUTUCK — When Kathleen Kelly and Trisha Casler attended Webutuck High School in the late 1990s, the district’s girls basketball program was an "unstoppable" force.

However, the varsity and junior varsity squads of recent years have been decidedly less successful.

Kelly and Casler now teach in the district and coach the varsity and junior varsity girls basketball teams, respectively.

This season, both coaches are hoping to experience the success the program had during their high school days.

The teams, which practice on the same court, have been doing drills and practicing ball handling skills since the beginning of this month.

"And we do lots of running," said Alysia Giglio, a senior who plays on Kelly’s squad.

Before practice this past Tuesday afternoon, the two coaches talked about their expectations.

"I’m looking forward to my girls improving and having an exciting year, as well as improving spirit and skills. We want to build the program up," Kelly said, adding that she’s counting on Giglio and fellow senior Kiera Rosa and juniors Hannah Peters, Colleen Trainor and Kayla McGill to lead the team this season.

"JV had a tough season last year. We’re looking to improve," Casler added.

She said Danielle Fontaine, Keely McCaffrey, Amanda Whitehead, Jaime Laliberte and Megan Scutieri should be the stars of the JV squad.

"She’ll come out strong in the middle," Casler said of Scutieri.

"She’s been working hard and she really steps it up," Kelly added.

Both teams’ seasons start on Dec. 15 at home.

"We’re both graduates of the school, so it’s nice to see the girls program developing to what it once was," Casler said. "Both of us are really looking forward to this season."
