Frances de Villafranca

KENT — Frances Lucile Gaines de Villafranca, a longtime resident of Kent, died peacefully Aug. 9, 2010, at her home at Geer Village in North Canaan.

She was born Dec. 4, 1921.

Having studied design at Kansas City University, Fran was recognized for her exceptional needlework and sewing skills, and her artistic touch was everywhere. However, after graduation, she accepted a job with TWA and then, after her marriage, she worked for Phillips Petroleum in Texas and Oklahoma.

The consummate volunteer, Fran gave tirelessly to each community of which she was a part. At Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass., she and her husband served as house parents to 60 boys.

When her husband accepted a new position at Kent School, Fran invested her energies to help serve the needs of the greater Kent community.

In Kent, she was the co-founder of Brownie and Girl Scout troops, was instrumental in establishing a kindergarten in the local school and served as president of the PTA and the Kent Nursing Association.  She served as a Sunday school teacher and choir mother at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Kent, where she was also confirmed.

She later became the “voice of Kent School,â€ serving as the school’s switchboard receptionist and more for over a quarter of a century.  Parents from across the globe and around the corner relied on Mrs. de V to serve in loco parentis. She never disappointed.

With a lifelong love of art and design, she passed on her appreciation of beauty to all — from her children to her friends and colleagues.  Her gifts were many.

She is predeceased by her parents and her husband of 57 years, Edward F. “Coe de Villafranca.

She is survived by her three beloved children and their spouses, Jill of Montreal, Canada, Richard of Cheverly, Md., and Edward of Allentown, N.J.; her sister. Mary Gaines Ehrlich of Wyckoff, N.J.; and a brother, Robert Gaines of Overland Park, Kan. She also leaves to mourn her four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Heartfelt thanks go to all the staff of Geer Village, who cheerfully and professionally made her last few years and final days a positive time for her and her family.

A graveside service will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13, at the Kent School Cemetery on Skiff Mountain near the Marvelwood School. A reception will follow at the Fife ’n Drum Restaurant in Kent.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Edward F. and Frances G. de Villafranca Scholarship at Kent School.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk Palmer Funeral Home.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
