Free swimming evaluations in Millbrook

MILLBROOK — Parents can test their children’s swimming abilities before the summer at a free swim evaluation clinic at the Millbrook Training Center.The free clinic will be held on Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 22, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at The Millbrook Training Center’s warm water indoor pool on 2647 Route 44.The free clinic is offered by Millbrook Aquatics and Free Families Forward. Samantha Cole is the founder and director of the group. She said she’s looking forward to offering the program to the community. “We put out free activities for families and everyone to enjoy in their community, which is our mission,” said Cole. “This year I was asked to do other activities along with the free clinic, including a free swim party and free Saturday craft classes. This is the first one that we are publicizing. We hope to have many families.”Anyone under the age of 18 can attend the free clinic and receive an evaluation form at the end of their session. “Participants will get a certificate regarding their swimming capabilities for the rest of the summer or all year around,” said Cole. “There will be nothing but certified instructors and directors.”Cole said that the clinic will test a child’s swimming skill level and give recommendations at the bottom of the evaluation to help prepare families for the summer. On Saturday, April 28, and Saturday, June 2, the Millbrook Training Center and Free Families Forward are hosting Crafturday, a free event for all ages including songs, crafts, activities and open play from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. This program is catered to children younger than 6. CORNWALL — On Sunday, May 25, Cornwall held a powerful ceremony to honor local veterans of the Revolutionary War.

At the cemetery on Route 4, about 25 attendees gathered to witness the placement of 10 grave markers. Bill Dinneen of the Cornwall Historical Society and Warren Stevens led the ceremony.

Marvelwood lacrosse goes back-to-back in HVAL

KENT — On Tuesday, May 20, Marvelwood School lacrosse defeated Woodhall School 15-9 in the Housatonic Valley Athletic League tournament final.

It was second straight HVAL championship win for the Pterodactyls and their fifth league title since 2018.

Mountaineers strike gold at BL track championships

HVRHS sophomore Ryan Segalla went three-for-three May 17 with Berkshire League gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. He was also on the gold-winning 4x400m relay team.

Berkshire League track and field wrapped up a season of competition with the league finals in Litchfield May 17. The BL festival followed with decathlon, heptathlon, steeplechase and hammer in Falls Village May 20 and Thomaston May 21.

The events included athletes from Housatonic Valley Regional High School, Gilbert School, Lakeview High School, Nonnewaug High School, Northwestern Regional High School, Shepaug Valley High School, Terryville High School and Thomaston High School.
