Full schedule of events for Railroad Days

NORTH CANAAN — Maybe it’s the big events, the carnival, car cruise or train rides. Maybe it’s the smaller traditions, the ice cream eating contest or sidewalk sales. For some, it’s the combination of them all that brings them out for the annual Railroad Days in North Canaan, which runs through Sunday, July 18.

Things slow down only slightly for events during the week, leading into the big, final weekend.

Just some of the highlights include Poetry Is Music 15, an Eight to the Bar concert at Geer, a craft fair on the Green and more train rides. The Berkshire Limited packed in the excursion train riders all last weekend, and seemed likely to do the same on its final runs on Sunday to Great Barrington and back. Proceeds benefit the rebuilding of Canaan Union Station.

And, of course, Saturday is fireworks night.

The Canaan Fire Company is raising money to buy a new firetruck.

Go to canaanfirecompany.org to see it being built, and help out on Saturday by donating at the boot drive, at the intersection by the firehouse, buying dinner at their food booth or a raffle ticket for big cash prizes, and give them some love at the firemen’s parade.

Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
