Fun and games at Morsel Munk

WINSTED — Morsel Munk, a combination outdoor sports and toy store, started life as an online-only store 10 and a half years ago. For the past six and a half years, owners Scott Rouleau and his wife, Brigitte, have operated a bricks-and-mortar shop  at 118 Main St.

For the holiday season, Brigitte Rouleau said the store has lots of unexpected gift ideas, including Docktails-brand beverage dispensers.

“They’re made of raw, unpolished granite,” she said. “There are little taps you can put on to serve wine or whatever kind of beverage that you like.”

The dispensers don’t necessarily keep the beverages cool; the stone is decorative.

The same company makes tea candle holders made from natural rock.

The store has a selection of board and trivia games, perfect for family gatherings over the holiday, including Beer I.Q., Wine I.Q. and Music I.Q.

Also look for a challenging hybrid board and electronic game called Escape Room.

“That game is definitely an intellectual challenge,” Rouleau said. “There are four different mini-games where you have to escape from a situation. For example, in the first game, called ‘Prison Break,’ there is a series of clues you have to solve in order to escape from the room. An electronic timer comes with the game and you have an hour to solve the game. It’s challenging, but it’s a really fun game.”

For the outdoor enthusiast, she said the store will have an end-of-season sale on paddleboards and accessories.

“We have tons of ski-board helmets, boards, snowshoes and goggles and accessories, all at discounted prices,” she said. “We sell snowshoes and offer snowshoe rentals. We have everything you can think of accessory wise, including hats and gloves.

“We sell a wide selection of Dale of Norway sweaters. The sweaters are handmade in a little town in Norway. We’ve been selling them since we first opened the store.”

Rouleau said there will soon be a consignment program, where they will take in and sell  used skis, snowboards, boots and bindings.

For stocking stuffers, Morsel Munk has a selection of old-school games such as Etch-a-Sketch and a variety of Star Wars toys.

“We have tons of games and toys for kids,” she said. “We have everything for all ages.”

Morsel Munk is open during the holidays from Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m to 7 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The art of Marilyn Hock

Waterlily (8”x12”) made by Marilyn Hock

It takes a lot of courage to share your art for the first time and Marilyn Hock is taking that leap with her debut exhibition at Sharon Town Hall on Sept. 12. A realist painter with a deep love for wildlife, florals, and landscapes, Hock has spent the past few years immersed in watercolor, teaching herself, failing forward, and returning again and again to the page. This 18-piece collection is a testament to courage, practice and a genuine love for the craft.

“I always start with the eyes,” said Hock of her animal portraits. “That’s where the soul lives.” This attentiveness runs through her work, each piece rendered with care, clarity, and a respect for the subtle variations of color and light in the natural world.
