Gilbert Defeats Oliver Wolcott

The Gilbert boys basketball team overcame a sluggish first half performance and went on to defeat Oliver Wolcott Technical School, 51-36, Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Torrington.

The Jackets had not played a game in a week and it showed. They scored a mere eight points in the first period against a team that has won only one game all year. The second period wasn't much better, as the two teams played to a 12-12 standoff. When the horn sounded to end the first half, the Jackets were clinging to a 20-18 lead.

Gilbert began to pick up the pace midway through the third period and began to stretch the lead, thanks in part to the passing of senior guard Jim Bunel and the scoring of T.J. Monka, who scored the bulk of his game-high 21 points on assists from Bunel. Senior Adam Vaccari was also instrumental in the second half surge.

With the victory, the second-place Jackets improved to 12-2 in the Berkshire League, tied in the loss column with first-place Litchfield, whose record stands at 14-2.

Alyssa Paniati scored a game-high 23 points to lead Oliver Wolcott.

Highlanders Defeat

Lewis Mills, 58-51

The Northwestern boys basketball team picked up an important win as the squad traveled to Burlington Saturday, Feb. 2.

The road-weary Highlanders got off to a sluggish start. The first half ended with Northwestern on the short end of a 26-21 score. That lead didn't stand up long, however, as the Highlanders came out fired up to start the second half.

Junior guard Chris Laudati, who scored a game-high 22 points, hit three three-pointers in the third period as Northwestern outscored the Spartans by a 20-12 count, taking a three-point lead, 41-38, heading into the fourth period.

The Highlanders continued their fine play in the final stanza, outscoring their opponents 17-13 to pick up the win.

With the win, the Highlanders improved to 10-5 in the Berkshire League and within a half game of the third-place Spartans, who saw their record drop to 10-4.

Lewis Mills Defeats

Lady Highlanders, 49-32

The Northwestern girls basketball team held its own in the first half before succumbing to first-place Lewis Mills Saturday, Feb. 2, in Burlington.

The Lady Highlanders trailed by just two points, 9-7, after the first period and were still within striking distance as the first half ended, trailing 24-19.

The second half saw the Lady Spartans gradually take control of the game and hand the Highlanders their ninth loss against seven victories, one game short of qualifying for the state tournament.

Kat Woods led the Lady Highlanders with 10 points, while Mary Nelligan chipped in with nine.

When designer Abigail Horace joined the Blackshires Leadership Accelerator, she was looking for support for her business, Casa Marcelo, which was founded in Salisbury in 2019. Through the Accelerator, she created the Black Berkshires Social Club, which creates culturally grounded social spaces for Black and BIPOC residents in the region. Throughout her experience, Horace found a community of peers invested in one another’s success.

“Finding Blackshires has been transformative,” Horace said. “Being a BIPOC founder in this region can feel isolating, and this community has changed that. They see my work, champion my business and have opened doors I couldn’t have opened alone.”
