Gilbert R. Schoonmaker

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Gilbert R. Schoonmaker, 84, died March 17, 2010. He leaves his loving wife of 63 years, Alta (Bierce) Schoonmaker.

Born Dec. 20, 1926, in Winsted, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Gilbert K. Schoonmaker of Monroe, Ann L. Schenck of Tumwater, Wash., Gary A. of Tahoe City, Calif., Gail M. Marconi of Arlington, Texas, Jan L. Delate of New Port Richey, Fla., and Mark T. of Stetson, Maine; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.

There will be no calling hours and burial services will be held at Grassy Hill Cemetery in Falls Village in the late spring. Donations may be made to Suncoast Hospice (thehospice.org). Visit an online guest book at mossfeasterclearwater.com.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
