Gilbert/Northwestern Spirit Club fundraiser a success

BARKHAMSTED — Not even a fire alarm could dampen the spirits nor diminish the outcome of the Gilbert-Northwestern Fundraiser held Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Mallory Brook Cinemas.A cooperative effort between the theater and the Spirit Club, the event was originally designed to raise money for the purchase of an unspecified gift for the football program. However, due to the cancellation of a home game, which resulted in a significant loss of revenue, the proceeds will now be used to help fund the season-ending banquet and other operating expenses.Club president Darlene Sullivan, along with other volunteer members of the club, were overjoyed with the turnout and the cooperation they received from the theater. The only glitch in the evening’s festivities came in the form of the theater’s fire alarm going off, which required a crowd of 200-plus to vacate the building. Undeterred, organizers relocated activities outside, where a much-anticipated raffle took place.Kelly Tellier was the big winner, going home with a 32-inch Samsung HDTV donated by Bill Baer, owner of the Sears appliance store located nextdoor. Other prizewinners included Kristin Olson (gift certificate to KC Dubliners in Harwinton); Mike Kurtz (five movie passes); Morgan Hall (Greenwoods Country Club gift certificate); Coach Scott Salius (one-month family membership to the YMCA); Tammy Kent and Terry Hall ($50 gift certificates to Wal-Mart); and Shelly Ambrozaitis (movie birthday party gift certificate from the theater).

Still from "The King of In between"

There is a scene in “The King of In Between,” a documentary about musician Garland Jeffreys, that shows his name as the answer to a question on the TV show “Jeopardy!”

“This moment was the film in a nutshell,” said Claire Jeffreys, the film’s producer and director, and Garland’s wife of 40 years. “Nobody knows the answer,” she continued. “So, you’re cool enough to be a Jeopardy question, but you’re still obscure enough that not one of the contestants even had a glimmer of the answer.”
