Gilbert's grapplers defeat Housatonic at home, 54-24

WINSTED — The Gilbert wrestling team paced like caged lions as they primed themselves to face Housatonic on Jan. 21. The Jackets’ focus and work ethic produced another big win as they defeated the Housatonic Mountaineers 54-24 at home.

Gilbert head coach Doug Smith said he was prepared to face a very difficult Mountaineers team heading into the match.

“They have plenty of good wrestlers and there will be some tough matches, Smith said. After back-to-back meets where the Yellowjackets faced multiple schools in a single day, Smith said he refocused his strategy on a single opponent. “It is a little different from a tactical viewpoint. You can focus all your energy on one match. It allows you to prepare yourself to go that distance.

The Yellowjackets were apparently prepared to go that distance. Housatonic surrendered early points to Gilbert with a first-round forfeit, but tied things up in a close second match win by pin fall. Yellowjacket Xavier Dubois snapped the tie with a victory by decision. The Mountaineers responded with another pin victory to take a slight lead.

Gilbert’s Tore Lovetere faced Housatonic’s Bradley Visconti in a lighting-fast duel at 171 pounds. Lovetere and Visconti battled it out for three periods with the advantage switching back and forth from one wrestler to the other up until the final moment, when Lovetere took a narrow 8-7 victory by decision, preserved his undefeated record, and tied everything up 12-12.

Lovetere’s success sent a surge through the ranks of the Yellowjackets, who responded with four straight pin victories from Ross Lopardo, Jose Dejesus, Marshall Deane and Josh Hoxie respectively. Housatonic broke the Gilbert sweep with a pin of their own, but Gilbert’s Alek Smith struck back with another pin victory to build upon an already solid lead.

With the victory already firmly in their grasp, even after a Gilbert forfeit at 125 pounds and a Housatonic forfeit at 130 pounds, Yellowjacket Tony Decato finished out the day with a victory by pin fall to give Gilbert a very sound 54-24 victory at home.

The Gilbert Yellowjackets add another win to their season record, bringing it 14-1.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
