Gilmore Girls fan fest fast approaching

KENT — The Gilmore Girls Fan Festival is fast approaching, with only six weeks until the weekend of the big event, Oct. 20 to 22, with Kent as this year’s host site.

The Lakeville Journal caught up with Jennie Whitaker, the festival’s creator and organizer, to discuss how plans are shaping up.

“Everything is going well,” she said. “We started planning in January, so it has been easier than last year to put this festival together since we have had more time to organize things.”

The festival’s inaugural event (held in 2016 in Washington, Conn.) was conceived, planned and organized in only four months.

“Last year was a learning experience,” Whitaker said. “This year, we will have one large tent in the field next to Town Hall. Last year there were three tents, and I felt that it was too spread out.”

Whitaker is also planning more events this year that will take place simultaneously. “I noticed a lot of people waiting in line last year. While people don’t mind lines, I wanted to make sure there were more event choices this year so no one is waiting too long.”

The wait might be worth it, for some fans and deep devotees of the show, which aired from 2000 to 2007 and was set in a fictional New England town that had a very Litchfield County ambiance.

“So far, we have 21 cast and crew members confirmed to attend, with a few more in the works,” Whitaker said. While most of the cast and crew members were also at last year’s event, eight are new to the festival this year. “Everyone is really excited for this.”

Whitaker is in the process of finalizing the schedule for this year, which will be released in the coming weeks.

“We do know that, like last year, there will be a Friday night crew panel and a Saturday night cast panel,” Whitaker explained. “Carol King’s daughter, Louise Goffin, has also recently confirmed that she will attend and  give a concert Saturday evening before the cast panel.”

Tickets to attend the event are still available and can be purchased online at www.gilmoregirlsfanfest.com. One hundred volunteers were being sought to help out; to find out if more are still needed, email volunteer@gilmoregirlsfanfest.com. There will be a mandatory meeting on Sept. 19.
