Gloria ‘Googie’ Midwood

MILLERTON — Gloria May “Googie” Midwood, 87, died Nov. 1, 2015, at Brookmeade Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.

She was born March 31, 1928, in Pine Plains, to the late Margaret (Miller) and Floyd “Stubby” Sigler.

Educated in Perry’s Corners and Millerton schools, Gloria worked at the Wassaic State School and was dental assistant for the Drs. Kappel for many years in Millerton.

On March 6, 1974, Gloria married the love of her life, Albert Midwood, who predeceased her after 27 happy years together, and miles of travel.

A great cook and baker who loved to entertain family, she was also a talented creator of whimsical stuffed characters, still treasured by many across the country.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Nelson and her husband, Wayne, of St. George, Utah; her son, Donald Barton of Henderson, Nev.; her stepsons, Thomas Midwood and his wife, Marilyn, of Millerton, and Richard Midwood and his wife, Jenny, of Sheffield, Mass.; her grandchildren, Lisa Bradley of Utah and Frank “Bucky” Barton  of Nevada; her step-grandchildren, Velvet, Jesse and John Midwood, all of Millerton; four great-grandchildren, including  Torin Midwood; several beloved nieces and nephews; and many devoted and loyal cousins, friends and caregivers.

She will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, Gloria was predeceased by her twin sisters, Liane Sigler and Lillian Conklin; and her brothers, James Sigler and Floyd “Sonny” Sigler Jr.

 A graveside service was held at  Vedders Cemetery at the Gallatin Reformed Church on Nov. 6. She was laid to rest with her late husband. Pastor Carol Miller of Pine Plains Presbyterian Church officiated. 

Arrangements are under the care of the Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains.

CORNWALL — On Sunday, May 25, Cornwall held a powerful ceremony to honor local veterans of the Revolutionary War.

At the cemetery on Route 4, about 25 attendees gathered to witness the placement of 10 grave markers. Bill Dinneen of the Cornwall Historical Society and Warren Stevens led the ceremony.

Marvelwood lacrosse goes back-to-back in HVAL

KENT — On Tuesday, May 20, Marvelwood School lacrosse defeated Woodhall School 15-9 in the Housatonic Valley Athletic League tournament final.

It was second straight HVAL championship win for the Pterodactyls and their fifth league title since 2018.

Mountaineers strike gold at BL track championships

HVRHS sophomore Ryan Segalla went three-for-three May 17 with Berkshire League gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. He was also on the gold-winning 4x400m relay team.

Berkshire League track and field wrapped up a season of competition with the league finals in Litchfield May 17. The BL festival followed with decathlon, heptathlon, steeplechase and hammer in Falls Village May 20 and Thomaston May 21.

The events included athletes from Housatonic Valley Regional High School, Gilbert School, Lakeview High School, Nonnewaug High School, Northwestern Regional High School, Shepaug Valley High School, Terryville High School and Thomaston High School.
